Guía de Lectura: Hellboy y todo el Mignolaverso
Un joven Mike Mignola (1960-), recién salido del California College of the Arts, comenzó a hacerse un nombre en la industria a comienzos de los años ochenta, primero laburando como entintador en series de Marvel, y luego aportando lápices a series como Cosmic Odyssey con Jim Starlin y el elseworld de Batman, Gotham by Gaslight, con Brian Augustyn. Ya entonces su estilo era inconfundible: líneas rectas, bloques de tinta negra, colores de alto contraste y una inclinación poco disimulada por la imaginería gótica. Luego de algunas colaboraciones con Howard Chaykin y una recordada adaptación del Drácula de Francis Ford Coppola para Topps Comics, la carrera de Mignola dio un giro hacia la independencia con la creación Hellboy. En un comienzo, John Byrne colaboró en guiones, pero rápidamente el dibujante ganó confianza y se graduó de artista integral.
La primera mini publicada por Dark Horse en 1994, Seed of Destruction/Semilla de Destrucción, fue un éxito, abriendo la puerta para una serie que nunca fue regular, sino que fue armándose a partir de números autoconclusivos y miniseries. Con el paso de los años, la historia fue ampliándose en ambición y alcance, ramificándose en un universo rizomático de detectives paranormales y terrores lovecraftianos. Así se fue configurando un gran elenco de colaboradores, entre los que se destacan John Arcudi, Guy Davis, Duncan Fegredo, Richard Corben, Lawrence Campbell, James Harren, Chris Roberson, Gary Gianni, entre muchos otros.
El Mignolaverso sigue la lógica de un universo compartido a lo DC/Marvel, pero con la ventaja de nacer y desplegarse bajo la supervisión de su creador, lo que suma cohesión y coherencia. Sin embargo, al desarrollarse de forma fragmentada, puede ser difícil seguirle el rastro. Por eso ofrecemos aquí en Ouroboros la guía definitiva de lectura. Pero antes, un par de aclaraciones:
- La guía de lectura (basado en, pero no idéntico, al creado por Mark Tweedale para Multiversity) es producto de mezclar el orden de publicación y el orden cronológico interno. Lo segundo es especialmente importante para las historias posteriores al año 1994 del Mignolaverso.
- Quedan fuera de consideración historietas no canónicas (por ejemplo, los crossovers con Batman, Starman y Ghost que Ovni Press publicó en un TPB Máscaras y Monstruos), series de Mignola como Baltimore o Joe Golem, que pertenecen al separado Outerverse, y un puñado de números que no han sido recopilados aun.
- Se señala cada historia en 3 ediciones: Dark Horse Comics, Ovni Press y Norma (única manera de leer la mayoría del material en español). En todos los casos, privilegiamos las ediciones más abarcativas por ser las más prácticas, y a la larga, más económicas.

Comienzos
La semilla de todo. Las primeras 5 historias, que incluyen dos minis, están ambientadas en el presente, introducen al elenco del Bureau (incluyendo a Roger) y a quienes serán antagonistas clave como Rasputin, Baba Yaga y Hecate. Luego miramos en el espejo retrovisor para reconstruir que le fue pasando a Hellboy desde esa fatídica noche en Escocia hasta Semilla de destrucción, incluyendo los meses perdidos del Rojo en México y el cagazo de tu vida en el espeluznante Crooked Man, con dibujos del maestro Corben. Quien quiera hacer una lectura más acotada, puede saltar directamente desde “Almost Colossus” a la próxima etapa, aunque antes de huir hacía adelante recomiendo enfaticamente la incombustible “Pancakes”.
